Etude 1 - Köhler Op. 33 Book 1 (Allegro Moderato)
Köhler Opus 33 Etudes > Etude #1 (Allegretto in C Major)
Flute Etude 1 - Allegro moderato (alt. Allegretto) is composed in the key of C Major. This piece can be found in the renowned collection known as Der Fortschritt im Flötenspiel (Progress in Flute Playing), Op. 33, Book 1, authored by the talented Ernesto Köhler. Additionally, it is also included in Robert Cavally’s well-regarded compilation titled “Melodious and Progressive Studies for Flute, Book 1,” making it accessible to flute students and enthusiasts alike.
This is a cheery flute etude in C major. Some useful Italian terms for you to know when tackling this etude:
Allegro moderato - moderately fast (“moderate” is the key word for me)
dolce - sweetly
allargando (allarg.) - slowing down
ritenuto (rit.) - slowing down
a tempo - returning to the original tempo
a warning about editions…
Depending on which edition you are playing from, there can be large discrepancies in the music ranging from dynamics to added notes. If you are playing Kohler’s Op. 33 Etude 1 for a lesson, make sure that you are working from a similar edition to that of your flute teacher.
Notable discrepancies between the 1905 Carl Fisher edition and Robert Cavally’s edit of the etude. Red circles indicate dynamics; green circles indicate extra notes.
