Kohler Flute Etudes (COVID-19 Project Part 1)

Sheltering in place with performances canceled through the summer, the future can feel grim. For performing artists, having the goal of an audition or concert helps us to structure our lives and set a personal trajectory. When these goals are removed, it can be difficult to find similar purpose.

Searching for my short-term purpose over the past couple of weeks, I think I’ve already had my fill of self-duets and collage concerts. These are a fun way to pass the time but, in the end, are rather fleeting in relevance. I wanted to create something that can hopefully have more sticking power after this crisis eventually passes.

I love to be able to provide my younger students with decent playing examples of etudes and solos. In the past, I would have just “voice noted” it. However, this time I thought I’d try pushing myself to create some YouTube content.

I am starting with Köhler’s Op. 33 Book 1 etudes. Although these are often described as “easy,” I am finding them anything but that. Here’s Part 1 (etudes 1-3).

Köhler Op 33 Book 1 # 1
Allegretto in C Major

Köhler Op 33 Book 1 #2
Allegretto in G Major

Köhler Op 33 Book 1 #3
Allegro in F Major

Köhler Opus 33, Book 1 Sheet Music
